Adaptalabs are hackathon-inspired events that I4C arranges to bring together a diverse mix of natural and social scientists, policy makers, and planners.

The aim is to work together, get to know one another, and find solutions to issues related to climate adaptation in urban environments. The 1st Adaptalab kicked off the project and helped hatch ideas that I4C should work on.

The 2nd Adaptalab drew on experiences from the project to further refine existing solutions and develop new ones. And now it’s time for the third and final instalment.

Co-developing policy-relevant messages

At the 3rd Adaptalab, taking place in Bergen, Norway, participants will co-develop a limited number of concise policy briefs capturing key lessons from the I4C project, the most compelling stories to be told, and recommendations aimed at decision-makers. The objective is not merely to summarise results, but to translate cross-cutting insights into clear, actionable, and policy-relevant messages.

Given that I4C’s experience spans multiple work packages, cities, and stakeholder groups, the process begins with five overarching themes that provide a shared framework. During registration, participants select two themes of interest and are assigned to a small working group focusing on one of them. Each group will jointly define the core ideas, structure, and focus of a policy brief.

The thematic areas are:

A more detailed description of each theme is available here.

From collaboration to policy impact

The event combines hands-on collaboration with targeted capacity building. Participants will explore the purpose and structure of policy briefs and learn how to tailor messages to specific audiences and policy contexts. Guided yet flexible group work will then focus on clarifying the policy context, key messages, supporting evidence, and concrete recommendations.

Following the 3rd Adaptalab, the policy briefs will be further refined, with selected outputs forming the backbone of the I4C policy event in Brussels in late 2026. All contributors will be acknowledged, ensuring visibility for both individuals and organisations. Beyond the briefs themselves, the 3rd Adaptalab aims to equip participants with practical tools and experience for future policy engagement. Building on the collaborative spirit of previous Adaptalabs, the event brings researchers and stakeholders together to exchange perspectives and co-create meaningful outputs.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bergen from 16 to 18 June 2026 to help shape the policy-facing legacy of the I4C project!
