I4C collaborating among the trees of Bergen
On 30-31 May 2024, the I4C Consortium came together in Bergen, Norway, for its second General Assembly. The 2-day meeting came at the tail end of a workshop on Climate Science and a roundtable side-event co-hosted by I4C and the Bjerkens Institute.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
The Bergen meeting was the first time since January 2023 that the I4C Consortium had met in person. Since the consortium is spread around Europe, these meetings are crucial moments for collaboration among cross-work packages. The interdisciplinary nature of I4C is both a strength but can also pose a challenge. Moments like this GA allow the teams to inform each other of the latest work, strengthen their hypotheses, build new partnerships, and share ideas, to ensure all angles are taken into consideration.
The official meeting kicked off with a welcome from Stefan Sobolowski – coordinator of the I4C project – from NORCE and then was followed up with a series of updates from the various Work Packages. The presentations showcased the work done so far, and the upcoming deliverables and milestones to come.
Some highlights include:
- The knowledge networks interviews to analyse what can be done to optimise the network will begin next week as a part of the “Knowledge networks towards societal transformation” (WP1). We look forward to the outcome;
- “Improving S2D predictions” (WP2) and “Co-production of I4C demonstrators” (WP6) will collaborate on a series of storylines to bring their statistical work to life;
- A presentation was shared by Stephen from “Near-term hazard assessment” (WP4) on the increasing length of heatwaves in Europe with an example of Bergen. This generated a lot of discussion on how these kinds of graphs can be used in the future;
- The announcement that the next Adaptalab will be held in Barcelona in March 2025. A Save the Date will come shortly. Here is our recap from the last Adaptalab.
ALL EYES ON I4C DEMONSTRATOR CITIES
In addition, interesting and inspiring updates on demonstrator cities were put in the spotlight for the occasion. The most important were the following:
- Barcelona is implementing a multi-stakeholder approach to ensure that regional high levels are aware of the project;
- Paris conducted different surveys to clarify the current use and needs of climate data. In addition, It was discussed to work with the results of the emulator to address issues on a regional and city scale;
- Bergen wants to involve known stakeholders within the network and re-engage them. I4C members were invited to a seminar by the Norwegian Civil Protection Agency to discuss the status of climate information;
- Prague has new actors in the health space and is also a test bed for the destination of the Earth Urban project. The city is researching how to use these other collaborations for scaling up.
It was a pleasure to meet in person in the lovely city of Bergen, and we look forward to what’s to come for the next year of I4C.
