Press release: Barcelona Supercomputing Center launches new temperature forecasting service to support local climate adaptation
As heatwaves become more frequent and intense across Europe, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) has launched a new climate forecasting service to help local authorities anticipate and respond to extreme temperature events in the province of Barcelona. Providing temperature forecasts up to four weeks in advance, the service gives decision-makers valuable lead time to plan and implement adaptation measures.
Developed by the Earth System Services (ESS) group within BSC’s Earth Sciences Department as part of the I4C project, the service transforms advanced climate predictions into practical information for local action. Through weekly bulletins featuring forecasts of maximum and minimum temperatures, maps, graphs, and user-friendly guidance, local authorities can better understand upcoming conditions and prepare for periods of abnormal heat.
The forecasts support a wide range of adaptation measures, including adjusting the operation of climate shelters, rescheduling outdoor activities and events, strengthening communication on heat-related risks, and protecting vulnerable populations. By turning complex climate data into actionable insights, the service helps communities build resilience and make more informed decisions in the face of rising temperatures.

According to BSC researcher Paloma Trascasa, the service was developed in response to requests from local authorities for temperature forecasts with a longer lead time than conventional weather predictions. Its goal is to make sub-seasonal climate forecasting a practical tool for public administrations, enabling them to improve preparedness and respond more effectively to heat-related challenges.
As climate change continues to increase the frequency and severity of extreme heat events, this new forecasting service represents an important step towards strengthening local climate resilience and supporting proactive adaptation planning across the province of Barcelona.
